Planning a wedding or event comes with a hundred decisions, and your flowers are one of the most important pieces of the puzzle. They add colour, texture and a sense of occasion that few other elements can match. But with so many options out there, where do you even begin?
Whether you're exploring ideas or are completely fresh to planning your wedding or event, this guide will walk you through everything you need to get started.
Finding Theme and Style:
Start by thinking about the overall look and feel you want for your day. Your style, colour palette and theme all work hand in hand and one influences the other. Maybe you're planning something soft and romantic, something bold and vibrant, or a relaxed, natural setting. The colours you love can help define the mood, while your venue and setting will naturally guide the tone of the arrangements. When you bring these elements together, it’s a florist’s job to design something that feels completely cohesive, even if the exact blooms change due to season or availability. It is less about the individual flowers and more about how everything works together to reflect the atmosphere you want to create. One of my favourite ways to help couples discover their perfect wedding theme is to describe it in just three words. It might sound simple, but it’s actually one of the most effective ways to capture the mood or feeling you want your flowers to express. Over on my Instagram, I’ve created a whole series exploring different three word combinations paired with floral aesthetics to help spark ideas and inspiration.
Bring Inspiration Photos, Not A Shopping List:
One of the best ways to communicate your vision is with photos. Pinterest, Instagram and wedding blogs are brilliant tools for gathering ideas. Show your florist a few images you love, not to copy them exactly, but to help express the look and feel you are going for. Maybe it is the colour combination, the loose shape of the bouquet, or the wild texture of a centrepiece that catches your eye. These visual cues give your florist a clear direction without limiting their creativity. Try not to treat inspiration photos like a shopping list. The exact flowers in that photo might be out of season, unavailable locally or not well suited to your venue or climate, which is completely fine! Your florist can find beautiful alternatives that achieve the same effect.
Know What Arrangements You Actually Need:
As you start planning your floral details and chatting with your florist it is really helpful to know some practical information, as these details all play an important role in designing arrangements that fit your venue. For example, your ceremony setting, whether it is a grand aisle or a striking altar, can be elevated with florals that complement the space and atmosphere like aisle decorations, altar pieces, pillars or entrance displays. Meanwhile long reception tables often work well with low linear centrepieces or scattered bud vases while round tables usually benefit from arrangements placed in the centre. To get a clearer idea of the floral options and arrangements available I highly recommend downloading the Floral Insider. It includes illustrations and descriptions that make it easier to visualise what will suit each part of your wedding. The more information you can share early on the smoother and more tailored the planning process will be helping your florist provide accurate recommendations and pricing that suit your unique day. And if you are unsure about any of it don’t worry your florist will guide you and suggest the best options for your setting and style.
Creating your perfect floral look comes down to combining your vision with practical planning and a little inspiration. When you have a clear sense of what feels right for your day and share your ideas openly, you give your florist the best chance to design something truly special. Trusting their expertise to bring your ideas to life means you can relax knowing your flowers will perfectly complement every moment. By focusing on the overall mood you want to create, gathering images that speak to you, and understanding the key details of your day, you set the stage for a celebration that is both memorable and beautifully tailored to you.
